Subaru Forester 2.5 X

Sending out a base model car for press review is a very brave thing to do. Most manufacturers will cover up potential flaws with bells and whistles as to distract most journalists from the underlying problems… Not Subaru. We were sent out the 2006 Subaru Forester X Premium. “X” meaning the lowest optioned version Subaru makes of the Forester. “Premium” meaning some toys is included with this version.

The Forester began life in 1998 to fill the slot between the Impreza and the Legacy in Subaru’s line up. The AWD, car-based SUV shared it dash and wheelbase with the Impreza, and life was good. Targeting small families, commuters, and outdoor enthusiasts, the Forester was known for its great handling, smooth ride, strong motor, and practicality. Ok, not the most exciting of reasons to be known, but for a car, there are far worse ways to be remembered (Think: PINTO).

My co-hosts are quick to point out the flaws in almost every car we review, and Jared even managed to find a way to incorporate his son’s review of this car into this week’s show. Granted, the tires screech around turns once in awhile, yes, it is not the fastest vehicle any of us have been in, you will NOT pick up chicks in this car… So why are we reviewing it? Because it serves a purpose in the lineup of vehicles you have to choose from.

The redesign of this car (truck?) in 2006 gave you an all new front and rear bumpers and lights, new center armrest, a bump in power to 173hp (up from 165hp), alarm upgrade, and a temporary size spare replaces the full size of previous years.

2007 brings a price drop (?!?!), new colors, optional satellite radio, optional AUX plug for the radio (goodbye ashtray), and new bottle holders in the doors. The “X” model now benefits from Subaru’s EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) which is an add-on to the ABS system.

Overall, whether you are looking at the base model “X” or the top-of-the-line “XT Premium” the Forester is a good bang for the buck choice. I have seen this car, fully modded with upgraded brakes and suspension, power turned way-up and driven 4100 miles in the past BULLRUN… The guys in car #54 managed to make the drive in comfort, with their own luggage in the back, and keep up with the Lambos and Vettes throughout the week; I would say this car has serious potential.
